Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often about APN membership, mentorship, partnerships, and how the network works.

What is APN?

The Afghan-American Professional Network (APN) is a curated, high-trust professional network of accomplished Afghan-American leaders in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and beyond. APN is not a large open membership body, a charity, or a cultural association, it is a small, credentialed body whose collective reputation is the product. The founding body consists of 9 Founding Members, each occupying a distinct professional category.

Who can join APN?

APN is open to accomplished professionals in any field who share the mission of elevating Afghan-American professional excellence and creating pathways for mentorship, collaboration, and economic opportunity. Membership is nomination-driven: a current APN member nominates a candidate using a referral code, and the Membership Committee reviews the nomination. The Founding Member tier is separate, those seats are filled by invitation of the governing body only.

Do I have to be Afghan-American to join?

No. APN membership is open to accomplished professionals of any heritage or background who share the mission. The qualifying criterion is alignment with APN's mission, vision, and objectives, not ethnicity, national origin, language, or religion. Membership, leadership, referrals, and participation are based on professional qualifications, ethical conduct, contribution, and mission fit.

Is there a years-of-experience requirement to join?

No. For Professional and Student membership tiers, there is no years-of-experience requirement. The nomination by a current member is the qualification, the Membership Committee reviews each nomination on its merits. (The Founding Member tier is a separate constitutional designation that carries its own governance criteria and is not open for new applicants.)

What does membership cost?

Dues amounts are set by the Founding Members and are structured per tier. Specific amounts will be communicated upon admission. The platform supports annual subscriptions, hardship exceptions, and in-kind contributions tracked by the Treasurer. Contact us or request a nomination to learn more about current dues.

What's expected of members?

Members are expected to participate actively, sign the code of conduct, confidentiality, and conflict-of-interest agreements, maintain good professional standing, pay annual dues, and represent APN's values in their professional conduct. Members also receive a referral code and are encouraged to nominate qualified professionals they know personally.

Is APN a nonprofit organization?

APN's legal and tax structure is determined by the Founding Members. The organization operates as a professional network focused on member value, mentorship, and community impact, not as a charitable or advocacy entity. Please contact us for current entity and tax-status information.

What region does APN serve?

APN is headquartered in the DMV, Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, and serves professionals based in or actively doing business in the greater DMV region. Members with active connections to the DMV area from elsewhere are also eligible.

How are members selected?

Membership follows a nomination-driven process: (1) A current APN member nominates you using their referral code; (2) You complete a nomination request form; (3) The Membership Committee reviews the nomination, two reviewers, at least one of whom is a Founding Member; (4) Admissions are ratified by the full Founding Body on a quarterly basis. There is no automatic admission, the committee review is the quality filter.

How do I get a referral code?

Referral codes are held by current APN members. Each member can refer any number of candidates, there is no limit on the number of codes a member can issue. If you know a current APN member, reach out to them directly. If you don't know a current member, you can express interest via the nomination request form and the Membership Committee may be able to connect you.

What's the difference between a Founding Member and a Professional Member?

Founding Members are the governing body of APN, 9 seats, each representing a distinct professional category. They hold governance authority, vote on admissions, set dues, and ratify major decisions. Founding Membership is a constitutional designation, not a pricing tier. Professional Members are the broader membership who join through the nomination process. Both tiers participate in the network, but only Founding Members hold governance votes.

Can I become a Founding Member?

Founding Membership consists of 9 seats and the founding cohort is complete. Founding Members are designated by invitation of the governing body only, this is not an open nomination process. If a founding seat were ever to open, the governing body would follow the criteria outlined in the governance documents. The Professional Member tier is the path for new members joining the network.

How do I find a mentor through APN?

APN's Mentorship program connects emerging professionals and students with APN members who have volunteered to mentor. Visit the Mentorship page to submit a mentorship interest form, you'll share your current role, area of interest, and what you're looking for. The Mentorship Committee will follow up to match you with an appropriate mentor.

How can my company partner with APN?

APN welcomes partnerships with businesses, sponsors, and economic-development authorities. Partnership opportunities include event sponsorship, program collaboration, and ecosystem engagement. Visit the Partnerships page to submit a partnership inquiry, and the Partnerships & External Engagement Committee will be in touch. Note that use of the APN name and logo requires governing body approval.
