Criteria & Eligibility

The selectivity is the value. Here is the honest bar for APN Professional and Student membership.

No years-of-experience requirement

For Professional and Student membership tiers, there is no minimum years-of-experience requirement. The nomination by a current APN member is the qualification. The Membership Committee reviews each nomination on its individual merits, professional standing, mission alignment, and the nominator’s personal vouching.

Required Criteria

All Professional and Student membership nominations must meet these universal requirements. All criteria are assessed at the time of nomination review.

  1. Nomination by a current APN member

A practicing APN member must nominate you using their referral code. There is no self-nomination path. The nominator vouches for your professional character and mission alignment.

  2. Good professional standing

No active disciplinary action, unresolved professional complaints, or legal proceedings that would conflict with membership standards at the time of nomination.

  3. Agreement to APN conduct standards

Willingness to sign the Code of Conduct, Confidentiality Agreement, and Conflict-of-Interest Agreement upon admission. These are the terms of membership.

  4. Mission alignment

A genuine commitment to the APN mission: elevating Afghan-American professional excellence, building trusted cross-sector networks, and creating pathways for mentorship and economic opportunity.

  5. DMV connection or active engagement

Based in the greater Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia region, or actively doing professional business in the DMV. Professionals with an active DMV connection from elsewhere are eligible.

  6. A complete, verifiable professional profile

A current LinkedIn profile or equivalent verifiable public professional presence that allows the Membership Committee to confirm professional background.

Strengthening Factors

Not required, but valued. These factors strengthen a nomination without being prerequisites.

Leadership roles and civic engagement

Serving on boards, holding elected or appointed positions, or leading professional or community organizations demonstrates the kind of engagement APN values.

Thought leadership and professional visibility

Publications, speaking engagements, advisory roles, or recognized expertise in your field strengthens the network's credibility and diversity of perspective.

Community involvement

Active involvement in the Afghan-American community or in broader civic and community initiatives aligned with APN's mission.

Mentorship capacity

Demonstrated interest in and capacity to mentor emerging professionals or students. APN members are encouraged to be active participants in the mentorship program.

International professional experience

Cross-border professional experience, particularly in the MENA region or with international institutions, adds perspective that strengthens the network.

Language skills

Proficiency in Dari, Pashto, or other languages is welcomed as a professional asset. Language skills are never a membership criterion and are never weighted against non-Dari/Pashto-speaking candidates. APN's working language is English.

A note on Founding Member criteria

Founding Membership is a distinct governance designation, not an elevated version of Professional Membership. Founding seats require at least 10 years of demonstrated professional practice, established standing in a distinct professional category, and a constitutionally separate admission process (invitation by the governing body only).

The founding cohort is complete. These criteria are summarized here for transparency, these criteria are specific to governance seats and are separate from Professional or Student membership nominations.
